Writing a Letter to the Editor (LTE) in North Carolina
The following is from Peace Media Group though they prefer not to be recognized since they see letters from individuals as more likely to be published than from an organized group.
Vernie Davis suggests a few tips he has gleaned over the years:
1. As with our advocacy work with legislators, it helps to have a personal story or link.
2. If it links to an article or op ed in the same newspaper, they like that of course.
3. If you can mention a representative or senator by name, it has the impact of getting shared with the legislator since they have staff clipping news articles that mention them.
4. Do not be discouraged if your letter is not selected for publication. It still serves the purpose of the editorial staff of the newspaper knowing what their readers care about and can lead to more press.
